December 2, International Whaling Commission, began in 1946

This is an international group that is responsible for the regulation of whaling. Whaling is the practice of hunting, killing, and processing whales. Find out which groups are allowed to hunt whales and why, and how the whale populations doing.

December 9, Horse Protection Act Passed, 1970

This is a Federal law that prohibits horses subjected to a process called "soring" from participating in exhibitions, sales, shows or auctions. "Soring" is the painful practice of irritating a horse's forelegs through the injection or application of chemicals or mechanical irritants. By doing this, the horse quickly lifts its front legs to relieve the pain, and this accentuates the way they walk. In the 1950's, many horses who were "sored" were winning many competitions. When the public realized how inhumane this was, the outcry led to the passage of this Act.

December 15, Free Roaming Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act Passed, 1971

This Act protects, manages and controls wild horses and burros on public lands. This legislation declares that "…wild free roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the nation and enrich the lives of the American people…"

December 29, International Day for Biological Diversity

This is a day to celebrate biological diversity in our world. Biological diversity is the wide variety of all living things, including plants, animals and micro-organisms, the genetic information they contain and the ecosystems in which they live.
