Rocky to the Rescue
When I adopted Sadie, my part terrier/part Lab, 20 years ago from the Dumb Friends League, I thought she was the last dog I would have. She was 2, and I was so lucky to have her until 17 when I had to let her go six years ago. I was devastated, and I didn’t think I had the energy or heart left for another dog.
Nine months after I lost her, I adopted a beautiful cat who was more than I bargained for, mostly in good ways! I continued to say when asked about a dog that Sadie was my last dog and there would not be any more.
Then one day I decided to go on the Dumb Friends League website and just “look around.” Well, you can guess what happened. The first face that really hit me was little Rocky, who was about a year old, 11 pounds and had been at the shelter for two months. I couldn’t understand that, as he had me at hello!
Rather than do my usual due diligence and think of every possible flaw and downfall, I just adopted him. WHAT a handful! He’s part terrier and full of energy. But I adore this little guy. I was starting to feel like a piece of furniture, and this little blonde baby boy brought life and love into my dull, sedate existence!
All it took was love and patience on my part, and once he understood what was expected, he got right with the program. A new pet is like a new spouse or child. You need to take the time to understand each other’s idiosyncrasies, habits and needs. It took three months with my little boy, but then it all fell into place, and he’s been terrific in every way!
