There’s not much better than snacking on a fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookie or two, is there? We know there are many (many) cookie enthusiasts out there, just like the Dumb Friends League Humane Education team knows our pups would appreciate a treat from your oven over a snack from a box. You know you can taste love, right? So, grab a bowl, measuring spoons and an apron, and let’s get baking.
Years ago, participants of the League’s Critter Camps baked dog biscuits and sold them to staff, and as camp evolved, new activities replaced old ones. The Humane Education team decided it was time to put a different twist on an old idea. Introducing Barks and Biscuits.
As part of the Humane Education virtual lesson series, the Barks and Biscuits program is a short video geared toward families and kids of all ages. The video lets you channel your inner Julia Child and bake a batch of vegan-friendly pumpkin dog treats. (The recipe is below if you’re in the mood to get a jump start on holiday baking and not wait to watch the video first.)
“Barks and Biscuits is a great way to have some quality family time, learn a new craft and make delicious treats for the pets in your lives,” said Humane Educator Kyle Warner. “Enrichment is an important part of our animals’ lives and even better if we can have some fun ourselves!”
Your pup will have to decide, but rumor has it, they’ll give the treats a four-ruff review! In fact, you may want to bake a few extra batches of this kid-friendly recipe to fill your dog’s stocking and give to family and friends with pups. How thoughtful, right?

Pumpkin dog treats
3/4 cup pumpkin puree (185g)
1/4 cup peanut butter (60g)
2 tbsp ground flax meal
1 1/3 cups oat flour (160-180g)
1/2 tsp cinnamon, optional
- Preheat: Pre-heat oven to 350 F.
- Combine: Add the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, flax meal and cinnamon (if using) into a food processor and blend until combined.
- Process: Add in the oat flour and process until dough forms.
- Cut: Lightly flour a cutting board and roll out the dough (around 1/4 inch thick). Use cookie cutters to cut as many pieces as you can and place them onto a parchment lined baking tray. Gather the remaining dough and repeat until you run out of dough.
- Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes.
Let the biscuits cool on a cooling rack, and them store in the refrigerator for one week or the freezer for two months.
