Sweet 9-year-old Hagrid arrived at the Dumb Friends League Leslie A. Malone Center after his owner passed away. The gray domestic long-haired feline was, how shall we say it nicely…? Let’s go with generously-sized, at 32 pounds. He had damaged nails that bled on both rear paws and a bowed forelimb that was obvious when he walked—all of which were attributed to his weight.
Just like his namesake Rubeus Hagrid of Harry Potter fame, our Hagrid captured hearts with his loyal, friendly and softhearted demeanor. With a sweet disposition as large as his body, Hagrid was immediately put on Hill’s® Prescription Diet® w/d® food to get his weight under control.
Hagrid charmed everyone at the League with his stunning golden-green eyes, vocal purrs and sheer enjoyment at being brushed. It can be challenging to imagine a cat Hagrid’s size being playful, but that’s just what he showed all who met him despite maintaining a penchant for being a social eater and happily sitting by his food bowl.
When Hagrid’s now humans Dylan and Jenna came upon him during a visit to the League, Hagrid, who, at that point, was down to 27 pounds, made quite an impression. “When I first saw him, I actually thought he was a blanket,” said Jenna. “The second time we passed him, I realized that the blanket had ears!”
When we initially checked in on Hagrid, we learned he adjusted to his new home perfectly and started healthily losing weight. At the time, he was down to 24 pounds, and he spent his days meowing (mostly for food), but he was happy as could be having staring contests with Jenna and Dylan’s gerbil, Tom Riddle.
League staff was thrilled when Dylan and Jenna came back to the Leslie A. Malone Center to add a new feline friend to their family. The couple shared that with proper diet, which still includes Hill’s® w/d®, playtime (and, of course, love), Hagrid is now 13 pounds! Thirteen! From 32!
“Hagrid enjoys lounging on the couch with us, being a potato and playing with his new brother Fish,” said Jenna. “He loves treats and being brushed but mostly meowing at us loudly when he wants food!” (In case you’re wondering, in this instance, Fish is of the feline variety and not of the gill-bearing aquatic kind.)
Both Hagrid and Fish have special talents for getting underfoot unexpectedly, but when a trip occurs, gentle head butts followed by kisses ensue. While Dylan and Jenna have given up on the notion of having any privacy courtesy of Hagrid and Fish not really acknowledging boundaries, the family is so happy to be together. “We enjoy both cats so much and can’t wait for many more fluffy and loud meowing years to come,” said Jenna.
Hagrid may have lost more than half his weight since arriving at the League, but this sweet kitty has kept all of his love and sparkle!
