Using the power of puppies to advocate for vaccines

It’s true. We’re vaccine pushers. As an organization, the Dumb Friends League cares for more than 21,000 homeless pets and horses each year and guess what? THEY ALL GET AGE-APPROPRIATE VACCINATIONS. If we do this for 21,000 animals, you can do it for your pet crew at home.

Why vaccinate you might ask? There are countless health benefits like keeping your pets safe from potential illness and helping to keep the animals and the community healthy. A benefit for pet and person alike.

But, don’t take our word for it. Let’s talk about an adorable little friend of ours who was directly impacted by vaccinations, or lack thereof.

Bandit

Bandit arrived at the Dumb Friends League just 8-weeks-old and very sick. He tested positive for canine parvovirus, an illness that causes vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. Parvo can be fatal if not treated, is highly contagious and typically affects unvaccinated puppies.

At his young age League, veterinarians were concerned about his immune system’s ability to fight off the viral infection. Thanks to the diligent care from our veterinary services team, Bandit recovered and was welcomed into a new, loving home.

The common immunization given to dogs includes a vaccine that protects them from parvo. Had Bandit received this vaccine, he may not have contracted the illness.

Bandit is just one (adorable) example of why it is important to vaccinate your cats and dogs.
